Educo Philippines is taking steps to strengthen its commitment to children’s rights and education in Mindanao, starting with a scoping mission in Zamboanga’s coastal communities. With a vision of creating better opportunities for children and families, the mission aimed to assess how Educo can contribute to education, child protection, and livelihood support in the region.
During the visit, Educo engaged with key stakeholders, including Community and Family Services International (CFSI) and ASMAE, and visited Sitio Hongkong, Rio Hondo, and Barangay Kasangyangan. These discussions and community interactions provided valuable insights into both the strengths and needs of the Sama-Bajau community, helping shape Educo’s potential programs in the area.
Building on strengths, expanding opportunities
Zamboanga’s coastal communities have a rich cultural heritage and a strong spirit of resilience, but access to education remains a challenge. Many children are unable to attend school due to financial constraints, while existing schools could benefit from more resources and infrastructure support. Scholarships, school supplies, and a curriculum that embraces cultural diversity have been identified as key ways to empower Sama-Bajau learners.
Ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for children is another priority. Communities are actively working to protect children, and Educo is exploring ways to enhance child protection efforts through partnerships with local organizations. By strengthening community-led initiatives, children can grow up in an environment where they are protected and given the opportunity to thrive.
Health and livelihood to sustainable growth
Families in the area primarily rely on fishing and seaweed farming for their livelihood, and many are looking for ways to adapt and build a more sustainable future. Educo sees an opportunity to support alternative livelihood programs that can complement existing skills while ensuring economic security for families.
Access to healthcare and nutrition is another area where support is needed. Communities are already finding ways to address health concerns, and by working together with local partners, Educo hopes to contribute to solutions that promote child well-being and proper nutrition.
Moving forward together
Educo believes that collaboration with the community is the key to lasting impact. By working alongside local organizations, government agencies, and the people of Zamboanga, the organization aims to co-create programs that truly respond to the needs of children and their families.
While the journey is just beginning, Educo is committed to building relationships, strengthening community-driven initiatives, and creating meaningful opportunities for children. With the support of dedicated local partners and the resilience of Zamboanga’s communities, Educo looks forward to making a positive and lasting difference in Mindanao.
