For a week last month (13 to 18 July 2017), about 270 reading teachers and coordinators from across Bicol gathered in batches in Naga City to train on Beginning and Developmental Reading with Educo and UP College of Education.
Through the training, elementary teachers enhanced their knowledge and skills on literacy instruction. They learned how to teach children how to read, develop genuine love for reading, as well as engage greater child participation in doing so.
The training was part of Educo’s Local Governance in the Interest of Children (LoGIC) Project. This three-year endeavor (2017-2019) aims to contribute to building communities where all children enjoy inclusive, quality, and transformative education in a safe and enabling environment. Project LoGIC will do this by establishing functional structures for the well-being of children in the Municipalities of Camalig, Daraga, Oas, Guinobatan, and Ligao City of Albay as well as Nabua of Camarines Sur.
After the training, one of the participants, Ms. Sgerlyn Encinares, a teacher from Ligao City, was so inspired, she wrote a message for the organizers on behalf of all teachers that resonates not only to Educo partner schools but to all child rights duty bearers:
According to Maya Angelou, “When you know better, you can do better.” This simple quotation encompasses the very essence of the Educo Training Workshop on Teaching Beginning Reading and Developmental Reading especially for us teachers, to do our share and task, as reading coordinators of our respective schools. From this simple quote we are reminded not just to settle in knowing but more so in doing.
We gained new perspective and additional knowledge to become more effective and efficient in our profession. To the EDUCO team, the proponents of this training, we are so grateful for this opportunity. This training targeted areas that we, as teachers and coordinators appreciate and are indeed grateful that we are part of this endeavor. We also discovered our need to KNOW and our need to DO.
According to Teacher Encinares, they learned the value of communication, continuous education, and networking through the training. And, finally, she highlighted that the training renewed her motivation as a teacher.
Because, it’s easy for us to get so caught up in the daily grind that we lose motivation or excitement for our job or interests. But this training provides a chance to get away and dedicate ourselves to the important issues for a few days. As a result, we will return to our workstation with renewed motivation to pursue our goals and find our enthusiasm rekindled. This can lead to higher productivity and fulfillment of professional and academic goals.
